I saw Wings Of Desire when I was at The Glasgow School of Art.

They showed it in the lecture theatre one evening. I remember coming out afterwards and going to a bar and hearing all the people talking and wondering if it was the sound of their thoughts. It left a permanent mark on me. Set in Berlin pre unification, it follows two angels going about their business. The photgraphy is powerful, shot in black and white and then switching to colour at points. It’s director of photography was a guy called Henri Alekan. He was 77 when he shot this.
Nick Cave has a musical cameo and Peter Falke plays himself shooting on location in Berlin. It’s a perfect movie. Wim Wenders directs. He also directed the movie from which Travis took there name. More about that another time. If you like movies and you haven’t seen this then see it. It’s also depicts Berlin so accurately. I have always felt famliarity walking around this fantastic city and it’s all down to this film. SEE IT!

I doodled this on piano a minute ago. This is how I write. Melody with mumbles which then lead to a phrase in this case it has begun life with a chorus of “Only Us”.
Usually these things sit on my dictaphone for months and sometimes I never look at them again but I thought it would be better to put it on here and post updates if it develops.

Went to see the boys next door play a couple of songs tonight. There is a music school on our street. They have a showcase show 3 times a year and so tonight was one of these shows.
I came into the show with two women playing a piano duet. It was very good. Everything else was fine although suffered from bad tuning. One of the easiest ways to sound good is to tune up as perfect as your instrument will allow. It’s something i learned when i were beginning to record in studios. After every take- tune up. The folks all played really well but the tuning let most of them down. And tuning is also a great nerve beater. It’s a productive fidget.
Anyways the boys came on rocked the tisch. They played Four Kicks by the Kings Of Leon. Their choices of songs have been very cool. Never choosing the obvious. Then I got a real surprise… they played U16 Girls… Travis’s first single on Independiente!!! It was brilliant. And of course… they were in tune.
Ahhh.
So I am home. Jet lag has passed. Clay has a temperature which is sweating out with lots of water and warm clothes. I can feel something stir at the back of my left nostril. Although viruses suck, there is relief in knowing I won’t have to sing tonight.

Tom plays in a band called Noah And The Whale. Their new album The First Days Of Spring, was produced by Emery. It’s brilliant. Buy it. Tom played on wreckorder. He features on 3 songs. 1, 2 and 7, prominently in 7 with a powerful violin solo… his playing is very distinct… he prefers to bow chords and notes together so you get the sound of 2 or 3 violins at once…
