Sledgehammer

3 January 2010

The park had about 300 people sledging. Don’t think I ever saw so many people sledging in one place. Before we left the house we had a discussion about head gear. I was thinking how nobody wears a helmet when they sledge. Clay wore a helmet.  We went down the hill 6 times. On the 6th, we hit the bottom of the hill at top speed. Usually people at the bottom of the hill quickly get off their sledge and move out of the way but some little kid in front of us stopped very suddenly  and just sat there. I had no time to steer out of the way and ran straight into her sledge at full speed as she was getting off. I smashed my left shin to bits. CLay went flying. He was fine. The kid was fine. My shin is fucked though. Will wear football shin pads the next time.

Good point about headgear…they always say drive in to a lampost and not a tree ( if you ever are forced to make that choice anywhere!) as the tree is the killer as the lampost bends , so yea , i guess h+s should extend to sleighs.. as for shins , well I guess jumping round on stage is out for a while!

I’ve never seen so many wooden sleds in one place before. They all look really similar too. Is that typical? I’m used to seeing more plastic sleds in the US.

Still waiting for enough snow to go sledging here in Toronto, very unusual not to have it by now, just very cold and only flurries so far…..best not speak too soon though, it’ll be here soon enough :)
My daughter wants to progress to a snowboard this year….i’m thinking full protective gear!
Glad no serious harm was done though Fran, looks like alot of fun :)

Plenty of snow here in Michigan…just not many hills…that video looks like a step back in time…awesome.

ouchie! ;) doesn’t look that steep actually…but I think the distance makes the speed, eh?
@Frosty…it just MUST be a wooden sled! Those plastic things survive one crash..maybe two. The wooden sleds are built for generations basically. I still got mine from my childhood!

Gemein, in Hamburg schneit’s immer nur so kleine Flocken und meine Mama in Berlin macht mich jedes Mal neidisch. Dein Video auch- ich will auch Schlitten fahren! Jetzt!!

(Maybe your wife translate this comment into english. ;) )

wooden slegdes! And people think am nuts here when I say that they still exist…you only get the plastic ones in the UK and they are rubbish. Sorry about the shin tho, guess 300 people sledging in one place is not very safe at all!

ahhh! i love that you write a blog Fran!! From other posts I was wondering what it is to “sledge” as we call it “sledding” in the United States. Also interesting to see wooden sleds as we only have plastic here in the States. Yes, next time more armor may be needed, sorry about the shin :( , glad clay is unharmed though :) .
