BUTTERCUPS

5 August 2010

It never rains but it pours
Do keep the wolf from the door
I see him sitting in silence
Outside my house
Quiet as a mouse
I tried to buy you roses but all the stars were closed (FH-“Yes…Stars” not “stores” )
And if I had a diamond ring I’d wear it through my nose
But I can’t dance and I can’t sing
A loser I suppose
So all I have is buttercups
All I have is buttercups
What is wrong with buttercups
Who knows
You said to have and to hold
Do let me in from the cold
I see you sitting in silence
Inside your house
Quiet as a mouse
I tried to buy you roses but all the stars were closed
And if I had a diamond ring I’d wear it through my nose
But I can’t dance and I can’t sing
A loser I suppose
So all I have is buttercups
All I have is buttercups
What is wrong with buttercups
Who knows
And this could be life as we know it
How can I see if you never show it
I tried to buy you roses
But all the stars were closed
I tried to buy you roses but all the stars were closed
And if I had a diamond ring I’d wear it through my nose
But I can’t dance and I can’t sing
A loser I suppose
So all I have is buttercups
All I have is buttercups
What is wrong with buttercups
Who knows
Who knows
Who knows

  4. sammy says:

It reminds me of a scene in Sense and Sensibility where Colonel Brandon picks Marianne some fancy flowers from his hothouse and Willoughby picks Marianne some wild flowers from a meadow. In this case though, she prefers the wild flowers, as she is truly in love with him.

Fran, I hope you aren’t offended but I don’t understand the line “..but all the stars were closed.” Do you mean the rose petals were closed and so you couldn’t see the colours?

Even though it sounded like “stars” I still assumed it was “stores” and thought it was just an accent thing or something. Thanks for the lyrics!

  11. Debbie (deebee) says:

I kept hearing “stores” at first but then I thought that sounded too americanised even after all the time you’ve spent in the USA.

I have just heard the song for the first time on the radio – and WOW!!! what wonerful lyrics.I think it’s a song about most relationships. “stars” was appropriate because my take on this song is that it is song about a “one time great love” which is now slowly dying. Where, once, the stars had signified romance the “closed Stars” signify the end or death of the romance. The singer is half-heartedly trying to rekindle the romance, but doesn’t hold out much hope as he doesn’t think much of himself (low self-esteem).At the beginning of their relationship, what he had to offer(and received by his lover) was special and precious and beautiful- like roses. With romance gone- all he has to give is likened to buttercups- non-special,non- appreciated weeds,no great effort has to be made to find buttercups.

I just love this song to bits!
Heard the song on (Dutch) radio and wrote it down and found all about it AND saw the very funny videoclip.
But the most surprising thing was that i found out you were the singer of Travis; the band we love here at my house.
The fact I liked this song immediately after hearing it has convinced me : I love the fragile moving way you sing it……
    It’s my personal favourite!
    thanx…..

    Beautiful song, I love it!

The stars/stores thing is just a poetic license, so we, the listeners interpret it as we like or can. It means that the artist is aware that he is bending some grammar or language rule, or making no clear sense, favouring the beauty of his creation.

    Thank you, Fran.

  24. Pilar says:

    Me encanta!!! It`s beatiful !!!

  25. alice says:
